Urgent calls are being made for sustained, long-term funding to support social home-building in Scotland, as the latest statistics reveal a continued slowdown in housing delivery.
The Housing Statistics for Scotland Quarterly Update, released yesterday, shows that in the 12 months ending September 2024, housing starts (14,768) and completions (19,828) across all sectors fell by 12% and 10% respectively compared to the previous year.
Social home-building is particularly affected, with the number of starts remaining at the lowest level seen in 20 years. In some local authority areas, such as Clackmannanshire, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, and North Ayrshire, no social homes were built during this period. However, none of these councils have yet declared a housing emergency.
Stakeholders are urging the Scottish Government to take decisive action to reset social home-building strategies to address the growing crisis.
